Who should attend retreat and why
1. REAMS: To work with very, very sick people Reams gave the criteria for retreat cases: "If you see the following numbers on a FIRST test it should automatically trigger in you a response that this person should not be put on an unsupervised program at home:
These numbers indicate that the energy level is very low and you may not have the time nor the expertise to work with these cases at home. Now some times nothing unusual may happen, but if it does you need experience and understanding to work it through. Now the good Lord excuses ignorance, but now that you know you may not be excused, so please don't take the risk, however "fools dance in where angels fear to tread". You may get away with it 1000 times, and on the next case you have a dead person on your hands. Just because you got away with it a few times don't keep it up because the law of averages does run out.
So if there's a doubt in your mind about whether they should be in a retreat, or other facility, then don't give them a diet to do at home because in 48 hours any diet that you give them their body chemistry will change and besides it could land them in a hospital because "that person gave me a diet that nearly killed me", and then you've got the AMA and the lawyers on your neck.
It's not necessarily a sugar problem, or any particular problem that puts them in a hospital, it's mainly fear because the body doesn't change from one pattern to another very easily, it resists the change, and it's that resistance that makes them have headaches, sick stomach, tingling, nausea and most any kind of thing and they'll just swear and affirm that the diet you gave them is about to kill them. It's a change in their body chemistry and it's the metabolic poisons and toxins coming out of their system. In other words, their system is beginning to restore itself, it's beginning to rebuild, and it's a shocking experience. Many times they may also have loss of hair and loss of skin during those changes, especially if they're an older person that has ever taken a lot of Calomel which has then stored up in their system and has never come out.
So those are the reasons we send them to a retreat because if you don't explain what's going on they're going to throw you out and say, "you don't know what you're talking about, you're making me worse instead of better". So it's up to you to tell them plainly what to expect when they start a diet, and then some of them have no place to put it, they won't remember it and therefore it's better to have some people in a retreat."
There's more but you get the idea; so a diet is not for everybody, and this program is not a thing to be tried for a week or a month just to see if it works. Testers need to be careful, and sometimes people need protecting from themselves. (compiled by Rob Owen from transcripts of Carey Reams' teachings)
2. MANTHEI/CHEM: Some clients will not be able to follow the program carefully because of emotional, mental or environmental reasons, and should give serious consideration to going to a retreat or similar facility. Still another reason is that no one should be put on a fast with this program unless the body chemistry numbers can be checked at least once per day. Therefore when the numbers are within the following zones, one should consider going to a retreat.
- Sugar less than 1.0 or on sugar controlling drugs (insulin, orinate, debenate, etc),
- Sugar consistently less than 1.2,
- Urine pH of 5.2 and under,
- Saliva pH of 8.00 and up, OR saliva pH of 5.2 and down,
- Salt of 47 and over,
- Salt of 40 and upwards AND age 35 or over,
- Ureas of 26 and over,
- Ureas of 24 and over, AND salt 40 and over.

- When the salt is above 35C.
- When the urea total is above 20 or less than 12 (220) [possible brain tumor].
- When the sugars are high and drop drastically in a very short period of time, this can be a cause for severe headaches, emotional outbursts, nervous flare ups or a feeling of weakness.
